Fabric Selection Made Easy

  • Choose colors and textures that will enhance your environment.
  • Many fabrics that have a 100% recycled content consider using these products to improve your spaces and the spaces that we all share at the same time.
  • Most fabrics work well with our stretched fabric wall system. Very light colored or sheer fabrics may be too transparent, requiring a liner such as "scrim" to prevent the background from showing through the fabric.
  • Fabric widths can vary by style and are typically between 54" - 66". To minimize waste, choose a fabric of the correct width for your stretched fabric layout.
  • Some fabrics have a directional weave, patterns or repeats. These can affect your layout and even the quantity of fabric required.
  • If you will be using your stretched fabric system for tackable surfaces, choose a self healing fabric that will not show the pin holes. For magnetic surfaces, make certain that the fabric is not too thick or has a raised pattern which can create an air gap, reducing the magnetic holding power of the fabric wall.
  • Fabricmate® Fabric Wall Systems are ASTM-E84 Class A Certified.
  • Commercial building codes require all fabrics and substrates be tested and certified as Class A in accordance with the ASTM-E84 or NFPA 255 test. Additional testing may be necessary. Consult your local building and safety codes for complete requirements.
  • Whether for commercial or residential application, use only fabrics that have been certified ASTM-E84 Class A.
  • The use of substrates that are not certified as ASTM-E84 Class A, or the use of wooden frames in conjunction with Class A certified fabrics is not recommended.
  • The fabric you select can impact the acoustical properties of your fabric walls. Many fabrics are acoustically transparent, which allows sound to flow through to your backing to absorb sound.
  • Both fabrics and backings/substrates have NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) ratings. These ratings, between 0 (perfectly reflective) and 1 (perfectly absorptive), relate to the materials ability to absorb sound.
  • 100% polyester, open weave fabric is the most acoustically transparent. These fabrics are often made from 100% recycled polyester.
  • Applied backings such as glues, paper and other materials, should be avoided, as they will significantly reduce the NRC performance.
  • Liners such as "scrim", used to mask transparent fabrics, may have on a minimal effect on the fabrics NRC.
  • Sound absorption is not the same as sound transmission. If you need to reduce the transmission of sound to adjoining spaces, a sound damping material must be used. Sound damping materials can be used in conjunction with absorptive materials.

Not all fabrics can withstand the heavy wear-and-tear of high-traffic environments. High-traffic spaces require durable, high-impact fabrics. The "Double-Rub" test is used to measure fabric durability by counting how many times it can be rubbed back and forth before showing wear.

  • HIGH-TRAFFIC FABRICS (Capable of withstanding over 30,000 Double-Rubs) Wall Protection installation such as chair rails or wainscoting in hallways & common areas should be faced with a fabric that can withstand regular and repeated abrasions. Most fabrics with a high-impact rating are suitable for high-traffic areas. High-traffic fabrics can be expected to last in high-traffic environments for well over 10 years.
  • MEDIUM-TRAFFIC FABRICS (Capable of withstanding 15,000 - 30,000 Double-Rubs)
You can face a wall with less durable fabrics if it isn't expected to receive regular impacts or wear. Walls behind a counter, residential spaces, conference rooms, or in any other area that doesn't see a high volume of traffic can be considered medium or even low traffic.
  • LOW-TRAFFIC FABRICS (Capable of withstanding up to 15,000 Double-Rubs)
These fabrics are meant for use in environments that won't receive regular wear or impacts. Ceilings or acoustic installations that are out of reach or not having much human contact can be faced with low-traffic fabrics since they won't receive much wear.

To convert measurements into linear yards, first, ensure your measurement is in inches. (If it's in feet, multiply by 12 to convert to inches)
Then, divide the total inches by 36 to get the linear yards. For example, if you have 72 inches, dividing by 36 gives you 2 linear yards. (72 inches / 36 = 2 yards)  To ensure you have enough fabric for your stretched fabric system, always round up to the nearest whole number, we then recommend adding 10% for assurance.  When ordering Prints be sure to account for the pattern repeat.  If in doubt please contact us. for assistance.
